In the last week of February, Maslenitsa is traditionally celebrated in Russia. In the Shrovetide festivities take part everything from small to large. Broad Maslenitsa is a national holiday, it is celebrated colorfully and recklessly with songs, round dances, contests and burning Pancake week. It is such Shrovetide depicted in the picture of Kustodiev.
The snow has not yet melted, the trees are covered with hoarfrost and hoarfrost, but people gathered around bright booths are not at all cold. The fair is in full swing, carefully looking at the canvas, it is possible to notice the main characters of the Shrovetide festivities - buffoons, Petrushka, devils. The less wealthy people arrived at the fair for their two, young ladies and gentlemen with the means - in smart sleigh harnessed by several pairs of horses.
Snow-capped peaks of trees cannot hide the brightness of posters and signboards, offering vacationers a variety of entertainment. A multi-colored crowd is ready to start eating pancakes, drinking mead and watching the action unfold under a canopy of a street theater.
When writing the canvas, bright, rich colors were used, allowing you to fully convey the fun that engulfed the crowd. The picture was not painted from nature. The year of its creation is considered 1917. In February of this year in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other big and small cities of the country guns rattled, blood poured, fires blazed.
A vivid picture is just a recollection of a past peaceful and quiet life, a kind of regret for the lost peace. In 1917, Shrovetide was almost never celebrated anywhere, and only the beauty created by Kustodiev’s paintings reminds people that life goes on and that everything is not lost in it.
The canvas is stored in the Russian Museum. The size of the picture is just over 1 meter, it is painted on canvas using oil paints.
