Looking at the work of the French artist Gustave Courbet, there is no doubt that he was the most brilliant master of portraiture.

Moreover, he painted not only portraits of other people, but also himself, and he painted a lot of them. A sort of sitter for himself. From image to image, we see how he perfects himself and improves his technique. If you look at the portraits in chronological order (without forgetting, of course, about this work), you can only understand the era in which Gustave lived.

There are paintings that delight. And there are paintings that lead to indignation. The Frenchman in his works was able to do both the one and the other, and sometimes with the same picture. In this self-portrait, however, there is nothing shocking, although the work is also called Despair (or Desperate). Perhaps we can say that this negative emotion is remarkably conveyed here.

What do we see in the portrait? A very young man, aged 20-25, with wide eyes. A somewhat deathly complexion, with pinkish, at the same time, cheeks, dark (probably brown) hair, a mustache and a beard reflect the emotionality of the depicted as much as possible. And randomly arms raised to the head vividly express despair, and maybe even some kind of fear.

The paints used by Courbet are very gloomy, the background is gloomy, but this does not repel the viewer, but, perhaps, on the contrary, attracts, despite negative emotions. The horror that is visible in the face with the naked eye attracts attention, paradoxically as it may seem. And this once again confirms the skill of the artist, who prescribed each line so subtle and sensual that I want to look at it. Professionals and art lovers will even be able to read the character of the character written in a detailed examination of the picture.
